A majlis is more than a seating area; it’s where families gather, guests are welcomed, and generations of Emirati and Gulf hospitality come to life. Whether you’re designing a traditional floor-seated majlis or a contemporary lounge with a modern twist, the right furniture makes all the difference between a space that feels staged and one that feels genuinely welcoming.
At Al Jinan Furniture, we’ve worked with homeowners across Dubai to create majlis spaces that honor tradition while fitting comfortably into modern homes. Here’s what we’ve learned about designing a majlis that works.
Unlike a Western-style living room built around a sofa and coffee table, a majlis is designed for low, continuous seating along the walls, allowing large groups to sit facing each other, encouraging conversation and connection. Comfort, generosity of space, and hospitality are the guiding principles, not just aesthetics.
This changes everything about how the furniture needs to be built. Standard sofa dimensions rarely work. A majlis calls for custom-length seating, low armrests or none at all, and cushions designed for extended, relaxed sitting rather than short visits.
Traditional Majlis Classic majlis furniture features rich fabrics like velvet or heavy weaves, deep jewel tones (maroon, gold, emerald, and navy), ornate cushion detailing, and low floor seating with bolster pillows. Wooden accents often hand-carved bring warmth and craftsmanship into the space.
Modern Majlis A growing number of Dubai homeowners are choosing contemporary interpretations: cleaner lines, neutral palettes (sand, beige, soft grey), raised seating instead of floor cushions, and minimal ornamentation with one or two statement pieces instead of heavy patterning throughout.
The Hybrid Approach Many of our clients don’t want to choose one or the other. The most popular request we get is a majlis that keeps traditional low-seating comfort but with a refined, modern material palette. Think a neutral bouclé or linen fabric on a classically shaped seating arrangement with brass or wood detailing instead of ornate carving.
Fabric selection matters more in the UAE than almost anywhere else. Between air conditioning indoors and intense heat outdoors, majlis upholstery needs to handle both comfort and durability.
Velvet luxurious and traditional, but can trap heat; it’s best paired with strong AC and used as an accent rather than the full seating fabric
Linen blends breathable and cool to the touch, ideal for everyday-use majlis spaces
Performance fabrics stain-resistant and durable, a smart choice for family homes or majlis areas used frequently for guests
Leather and faux leather are striking for modern majlis designs, but requires careful placement away from direct sun exposure
Cushion fillings also matter; high-density foam holds its shape far longer than standard fillings, which is especially important since majlis seating sees heavier and more frequent use than a typical sofa.
Smaller Majlis Rooms
Use an L-shaped or U-shaped seating arrangement to maximize seating without overcrowding the space. Keep the color palette light to avoid the room feeling closed in, and choose slimmer bolster cushions over oversized ones.
Larger Majlis Rooms
Full perimeter seating works beautifully in bigger spaces, allowing for larger gatherings. Consider a central rug to anchor the seating and a low, long coffee table setup (or traditional floor trays) rather than multiple small tables.
Multi-Purpose Majlis
If the space needs to double as a family lounge outside of guest hours, modular custom seating that can be reconfigured combined with storage-friendly designs gives you flexibility without sacrificing the traditional feel when guests arrive.
Because majlis dimensions and seating arrangements vary so much from home to home, ready-made furniture rarely fits properly. A custom approach lets you:
Match seating length exactly to your room’s wall dimensions
Choose fabric, color, and cushion firmness suited to your household
Blend traditional and modern elements in a way mass-produced pieces can’t offer
Ensure durability with materials chosen specifically for the UAE climate
At Al Jinan Furniture, every majlis project starts with understanding how the space will actually be used daily family time, formal guest hosting, or both before a single measurement is taken.
